What purposes do hot water storage tanks serve?
Hotels, residential complexes, commercial buildings, hospitals, shopping malls and other facilities that need constant supplies of hot water usually have a stainless steel hot water storage tank.
They are sized to meet peak demands, even though the usage at these times exceeds the output of the heater.
This is achieved by selecting a tank of sufficient size, with adequate insulation, and designed to prevent incoming cold water from mixing with the hot water supply.
These tanks are are either made out of stainless steel or lined to prevent corrosions. The standard design working pressure is 7 to 10 kg/cm-sq, which exceeds typical city water main pressure.
Which NDT Techniques Are Utilised for Hot Water Storage Tank Inspection?
NDT Techniques being used for hot water storage tank manufacturing, quality assurance and inspection:
To mitigate operational risks, hot water tank manufacturing and inspection involve the application of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques.
For the detection of surface-level defects following NDT techniques are used:
Visual Testing
One prevalent NDT approach involves visually inspecting the storage tank to identify defects.
Visual testing requires good visibility, training and perfect eyesight of the inspector. The visual testing method has easy access to the surface.
Magnetic Particle Testing
Employed for surface and sub-surface defect detection, magnetic particle testing is a valuable NDT method applicable to ferromagnetic materials like carbon steel.
Dye Penetrant Testing
A penetrant, generally a red coloured die, is sprayed on the vessel surface to detect its surface flaws. To make defects more visible under UV light, a fluorescent chemical is also added.
This test is effective in case the defects are exposed to the surface.
For internal defects of pressure vessels following NDT techniques are used:
Radiographic Testing
Here radiations are applied to the component, and any alteration in the material can be detected and recorded on the film.
Radiography is the most popular NDT technique as it can capture defects on the film and also provides a hard copy of it.
